can prevent this!!!

Some of you have complained about the calluses that have been growing like barnacles on your hands. That’s good. That means you have been lifting heavy freakin’ barbells. What’s bad is that these li’l barnacles grow to be the size of small chinchillas and then riiiiiiiip at the most inopportune times (a la mid-Fran). They can also be a tough sell to your significant other.

There are two main components of callus care: 1) Maintenance and 2) Prevention. We’ll talk about Part 1 in this post. That’s where the Ped Egg comes in. Even though it’s one of those evil infomercial items, I’ve tested it on my own hands with great success. It has little microplane-esque graters that take just the right amount of dead skin off. It also comes with a sandpaper attachment that smooths out the skin you just took off.

I use it on wet hands, so that they are a bit softer, but it’s just my preference. Open up your hands wide, and rub on calluses. Go easy with these suckers. It’ll hurt just as much if you take TOO much skin off and you have to rebuild the calluses from scratch. What you want is a thin layer of skin that will act as a buffer when you pull heavy barbells, or execute a lot of pull ups. Trust me on this and learn from my mistakes.

Parts 2 (Prevention by Taping) and 3 (Triage) to follow soon.

Isn’t that ketchup after eating a 6 dollar burger, after all if it doesn’t get all over the place it doesn’t belong in your hands?

Great prescription today Ruth, kicked my ass. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

[...] File down your calluses with a ped-egg. Just do it. This doesn’t mean shaving your calluses down to the bone… it just means making it so that when you grip the bar your callus isn’t on side of the bar while your palm is on the other… this is what makes you rip! [...]
