With 70s Big Justin Lascek

Does the picture above look familiar? Well it should if you were with us back in November of last year. Here’s the original post for a flashback. In the picture with Ruth and Sean is Justin from Rip’s staff as well as the 70′s Big website, which we’ve quoted a time or two. What Ruth left out of her post was Justin’s assessment of both her and Sean’s impressive abilities and how he strongly urged them to compete to test their skills. Okay, I can understand being modest so perhaps she chose not to toot her own horn. However, they were mentioned on the 70′s Big site when Justin wrote about their seminar.

In other news, I’m pretty confident that I convinced Sean and Ruth to compete in weightlifting. They both have comical amounts of potential in their athletic ability, and I can’t wait to hear about their competitive conquest. It’d be a shame to see that talent untapped, so hopefully I gave them a nudge out of the door.
You two are obligated to stay in touch.

Since you’ve undoubtedly seen them in action, I’m sure you all can agree that Ruth and Sean have quite a bit of potential. So you can imagine Justin’s disappointment when I ran into him during my seminar in February, he asked about the dynamic duo and I had to admit they hadn’t competed yet.

I have been encouraging both of them to step up and commit to a particular meet so they have a definite date to plan for. If I recall correctly, it may even have been someone’s New Year’s resolution. Last weekend, Ruth and Sean were away at a seminar and the discussion turned to the olympic lifts and weightlifting meets. No big surprise that they were encouraged yet again to compete. What they didn’t know is that one of the presenters, Gant Grimes, turned in a full report to Justin about how neither had competed yet. You can imagine Ruth and Sean’s surprise when they were the focus of a post yesterday. A brief excerpt:

I’d like to file a formal complaint. This is serious, so I want you to listen…

Some of you are sandbagging, and I don’t like it.

I need to direct my malcontent towards someone, so I am going to choose my pals Ruth and Sean, from CrossFit Intrepid. Yeah, you guys are totally busted. Gant told me all about how you haven’t competed in a weightlifting meet. Gant met them last weekend when he presented at a seminar/workshop, and I met the couple at one of Rip’s barbell seminars at the end of last year.

These two goons have some serious potential in Olympic weightlifting, and would do pretty decently in a meet…yesterday. Apparently they said some hogwash to Gant about “not being good enough” or something. Gant’s response is that you aren’t going to be good enough when you first start competing, but you have to compete in order to get good at competing. Pretty straightforward.

I’m happy to report that Ruth and Sean will be stepping onto the lifting platform on April 24th in San Juan Capistrano for the Ironman Spring Open. Obviously we’ll be organizing an official Intrepid cheering section to carpool down and root them on. More details will follow as we get closer to go time. Hopefully some of you will see how fun the competition can be and may choose to follow in their footsteps for a future meet!

Nobody likes a tattletale…

And to quote Anna:”you’re soooooo fired!” :-P

Tattletale? No, I like to think of myself as an intrepid reporter. (See what I did there? Didja? So clever.)

You two will perform awesomely! Both of you are no strangers to high-level competition so we’re all certain that you’ll open up this new aspect of your training with great performances. Hope we can make it out to be part of the cheering section!

Who knows Al? Since it’s in SJC, we may have to plan a post-meet celebration at the Casa de Viquez!
