One can’t deny that recently, current events and Hollywood have embraced a common theme of a possible post-apocalyptic reality within this generation. While the chances of that are indeed slim, it doesn’t hurt to stay earthquake/zombie prepared.  Because urban primal/paleo foragers rely so much on local grocers or farmers markets for fresh meat, fruit, and veggies, we may be rather lost if thrust into a grok-like world where hunting and gathering become a reality.   Mark’s Daily Apple recently posted about how to prepare for a disaster by hoarding some supplies.   It’s basically your typical earthquake preparedness kit, with a primal twist.  Here are a few basic necessities:

  1. Knives: handy for cooking, and, as a weapon, never runs out of bullets
  2. First aid kit: super glue, band-aids, neosporin, tweezers
  3. Water: think a quart a day when rationed
  4. Sardines: (in oil, not water) rich in omega-3, protein, and calcium
  5. Nuts: nut butters have a longer shelf life than regular nuts.
  6. Coconut milk: can last 5 yrs when canned
  7. Canned veggies/fruit: Pick nutrient dense canned goods; spinach, tomatoes, pumpkin, and pineapple.  Avoid corn, fruits in syrup, etc.
  8. Vodka: antiseptic, anesthesia, analgesic, and aperitif, all rolled into one.
  9. Olives: add to #8
  10. Salt, spices, Tabasco sauce
  11. Ghee: clarified butter, lots of fat, will last forever unrefrigerated
  12. Matches, batteries, solar powered charger (so you can still wod to music), and a spork.

Now, while this was a tongue in cheek post, it did give me a reason to update my earthquake kit (down to 2 MRE’s and a gallon of water) and peruse some interesting links about survival.  After all, CrossFit is training for the unknown and unknowable, so we might as well cover all the bases!

So, I am pretty sure this is the best post ever. I dont think I ever told anyone in the gym but I have a recurring dream that I am a zombie hunter. I am pretty bad ass in my dreams too. GREAT post Ruth!

Make a checklist of your content and the expiration dates on any perishables.

If you have an iPhone, download Pocket First Aid & CPR, it’s a great resource to have for any triage type incidents.

BTW Ruth, it shouldn’t be “If” Zombies Attack, but When.

Steph and I put together a survival kit a few months back, I’ll pull my list together and post tonight.

Also today’s WOD, is the 400M just on the front and tail end of the WOD? :)

Gotta know if I should run my lunch 10K today.

@Mike – yes, the 400m is “just” on the beginning and end in a sandwich. If you’re insane enough to run 10k at lunch, more power to you.

Yes, I know, Marcus, but I didn’t want to sound crazy putting “When.”

Thanks for stepping up to the plate!

I see a Shuan of the Dead sequel starring you and Jake!
