The 70sBig crew left us with a lot of great information and tips to improve our training. One thing Justin was adamant about was that everyone should compete in something because it provides motivation, helps focus our training, and makes us comfortable taking risks. You have seen how the monthly gym challenges have created an atmosphere of friendly competition and camaraderie and how we push each other in every WOD, but what he was referring to was something like an Olympic weightlifting competition, powerlifting competition, or CrossFit competition like this Saturday’s NLP Invitational, the Clash of the Affiliates competition on Sept 11th, or next year’s sectionals.  It would be most beneficial to shoot for something at least a few months out so we have time to tailor your training program and so your body can adapt to be better prepared for your competition.  The competition can also be an endurance event like a marathon or triathalon which many of Intrepid’s athletes are preparing for.  Scott is preparing for a triathalon while Pooja and Alia are prepping for a half-marathon and a marathon respectively.  Sometimes having a long term training goal like a competition helps push you harder in your training and can make a huge difference in terms of results.  For example, up until a few weeks ago many of our athletes had never done Kettlebell Snatches, but because it will likely be one of the movements in this weekend’s NLP competition everyone has worked on the movement and many have seen impressive gains in the weight used.

This weekend Intrepid has 6 athletes competing in the NLP Invitational competition:  Avelyne, Dustin, Drew, Jake, Ruth, and myself.  Each athlete has been working hard leading up to this competition and I believe each and every one will see the fruits of their labor this weekend as they push their limits against folks from all over the area.  Wish all our athletes luck as they use these last few days to put the finishing touches on their preparation.

Hey guys, just a heads up: we added the class reservation option to our schedule. Click on the Schedule tab above, login, and you can reserve your spot in class.

It’ll be our way of keeping the classes relatively manageable in size and have the proper coach/athlete ratio.

Sorry, 7pm class, you’ll have to register ahead of time starting this Monday. If the class is booked full and you show up without registering, there’s a good chance you’ll be wodding in the alley by your lonesome!! :-(

This info will be repeated in a post and in class. Burpee penalty for crying wolf (aka reserving a spot and no-showing).

is it ok to sign up for the 7pm class but then cancel that day if we can’t make it?

My feelings will be hurt. That’s at least a burpee penalty.

Currency Exchange: 10 burpees OR 1 Fudge Baby. Payable to Ruth

Can we set aside some time, so you can show us in a Powerpoint format on how to reserve a spot for 7pm? I want to make sure I make no mistake and miss out on the hottest timeslot of the week.

I’m asking for a velvet rope outside the front door. Sean will have the clipboard and a headset.

I read this somewhere and thought it was an appropriate thing to share with NLP coming up…

by Jon Gilson from Again Faster

There’s always something.

The bright lights. The Top 20 pop. Someone wanting to talk to you about the something about the time you did the thing.

Ignore them. Not nasty. Not with distain. Because now is the time, the moment when you concentrate on the task ahead, on the never-ending belief that what’s about to go down will go down, that you can’t be beaten.

Every ounce of psychic energy you’re about to bring to bear; it’s easy to disrupt, easy to kill. You have to protect it, feet on the ground, head down, focusing on the simple mental images of success.

Your next personal record, better than last time, better than ever, it’s right here in front of you, ready for the taking.

There is great power in the singular sight, the sole goal, the only reason you came here. Your next personal record, better than last time, better than ever, it’s right here in front of you, ready for the taking.

And now, you have to take it. Two words, three words run through your head, a tight, concise, pithy description of the end state, the moment right before the chest bumps and high fives and screams like a fifteen-year-old’s cracking voice.

When they try to distract you, jump in on your bar, talk about the suck, borrow your 5s, cure your stress, just stop. Look up, make eye contact, not angry but ready, and look back down. This isn’t about Community. Not now. This is about winning, succeeding, making yourself believe that what’s about to happen will happen, must happen, that nothing else can happen, the intellectual certitude followed by physical reality.

And then, get ready to go. Grip the bar. Chalk up, and remember that your momentary lapse in social nicety will be rewarded with what you wanted, the moment of apex. Your short, pithy phrase repeats until there is nothing else, no sound, no Top 20, no mats, no platforms, no nothing except a bar and a goal, the universe bent around you in a cocoon of now.

Don’t think heels down, chest up. Don’t think at all, because you don’t need to. You already did it, and miracle of miracles, what was supposed to happen happened. It’s over your head. It’s locked out.

And now, they fade back in. The sound of volume slow marching to full blast, clapping, screaming, backslapping rah.

You can give in, or you can go back. Sit down, shut your eyes, and bring pithy back. Because it’s not over, and you can shut it out again. Accept that this is just a step and not the end, and it will happen all over again. Another record, not a defining moment, but an ephemeral glimpse at where you were, the shallow footprint of an athlete who’s moving forward faster.

Ignore them, and bring it. Because there’s always something more.

If anybody gets kicked out of class for not signing up, you are welcome to walk up the hill to our house for a non-paleo dinner.

Seeing as how you’re signed in for 7pm class, will Brian be doing the cooking?

I think we all need to taste this “fudge” Jenna has been smuggling in to make sure it’s in fact Paleo certified. Jenna I will need about a dozen of them to make a sound decision. :P I’ll provide the whole milk
