Community: : a unified body of individuals, a group of people with a common characteristic or interest together within a larger society
Yesterday’s “drop in’s” were a touching and welcomed surprise from CrossFit Inland Valley. Though for those of us that know Al Viquez, it’s no surprise that he would take CrossFit Unlimited’s tradition and pay it forward. The best thing about CrossFit is the community it creates. Matt W. brought up a good point recently about the loss of community that America has undergone in the recent decades.
The Washington Post published an article about this problem, hypothesizing that it began in the 60′s in the advent of TV. Fewer families ate dinner together; longer commutes to work reduced time spent in social settings; the list goes on. While people may be in touch with more friends than ever due to social networking, the day to day intimacy of close friends diminishes.
However, our little CFI fam has managed to create a wonderful community, where we are up on each other’s lives (whether we like it or not!). We wish each other well on exams (Pooja!), job interviews, and times of illnesses. We share the joy of promotions, engagements, and new jobs (even when they re-locate our family members…).
And each of us has contributed to the growth of this community, either by bringing friends or by making new ones at the boxes they visit. The family tree that CrossFit has managed to unite is extensive and worldwide. I have no doubt that any of you can run into a CrossFitter that does not speak english and you can still have a full conversation (since pantomiming Fran would be rather easy!).
Thank you Intrepids for how special you’ve made our community and thank you Al & CrossFit Inland Valley for extending the family. We’ll be sure to participate in the Air Force WOD soon!
Don’t forget about the Holiday Homecoming Party tomorrow at 7pm at Scott & Michelle’s. Bring a dish and come sporting your best Ugly Sweater!! Email or txt me for the address if you haven’t been in to the gym to get it (ahem..Viv!).

Does the Ugly sweater party have a prize? I only ask because I know I will win. Provided I can find my sweater…
We sure do miss our CFI community. We are slowly settling in down here probably because we obsessively introduce ourselves to people as a result of fearing the CFI burpees. We are adjusting to slightly longer metcons with some hesitation, hahaha. But the trainers are great, so it is nice to at least have that support during those longer metcons.
We will see you tomorrow!

i love this post, ruth! and even though i’m totally obsessed with the family i was given, i’m equally crazy about the families i’ve chosen and continue to choose in my adult life. all of you are part of my chosen family, and if i told you individually how bananas i am about you, i’d probably embarrass both of us.
ALSO, i get to leave work early today, so i’ll see you at 5 for this badass WOD! i’m so excited! no, really!
p.s. steph, with the pistols… you’re killing me. nice work!

Steph, you are a rockstar! Because I love you, I won’t get bitter that you stole the November challenge win from me 9 days into December =)
And if there’s a prize for ugly sweater, I’m thinking Scott has it locked up. Super-tight-vest. That’s all I’m sayin…
See you guys tomorrow!
