Mark Sisson author of the Mark’s Daily Apple blog recently posted on seven ways that we might be sabotaging our own sleep. On occasion I’m guilty of a few of them. Despite having a large roll up door and skylights upstairs, I could do better getting more direct exposure to sunlight for circadian rhythm purposes but also to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels. Since I don’t get enough Vitamin because of lacking exposure to sunlight, I take a Vitamin D supplement. I try and take it early in the morning with breakfast but sometimes end up taking it later in the day with dinner. Mark mentions that taking Vitamin D can also mettle with one’s circadian rhythm because our body might think it’s still daylight. I can vouch that taking Vitamin D later in the day does indeed make it tougher to fall asleep and I felt that my quality of sleep wasn’t that great.
I’m also guilty of staying up later than I need to on most nights. Cade’s finally asleep, so why I am I still awake watching television, searching random stuff on the internet, or reading? No good reason other than to veg out, but I think I’d be better served by getting some more shut eye.
Besides not getting enough exposure to sunlight during the day, taking Vitamin D late in the day, and staying up too late in general Mark mentions four other ways we’re inadvertently sabotaging our sleep. Glance over his entire post here on his Mark’s Daily Apple site and start taking your sleep more seriously.
